There seems to be so much going on in our world these days that could send us into a full blown panic attack. This COVID-19 strand of the coronavirus has certainly shaken our society, our nation, and our world. It would be very easy to become controlled by fear and worry. However, we look to scripture and we are reminded in 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” So how do we fight off these feelings of despair and fear?

There seems to be so much going on in our world these days that could send us into a full blown panic attack. This COVID-19 strand of the coronavirus has certainly shaken our society, our nation, and our world. It would be very easy to become controlled by fear and worry. However, we look to scripture and we are reminded in 2 Timothy 1:7 that “God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” So how do we fight off these feelings of despair and fear?

God’s Word offers us the truth we need to stay sane and confident. Psalm 91 contains a wonderful remedy for overcoming fear. I will only deal with a small section of this chapter here but I encourage you to consider the entire 91st Psalm later. You can also listen to my recent message from this text on this website under "sermons."

First of all the Psalmist tells us that position is important. The Psalmist begins in verse 1, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” If I can keep myself positioned in God’s shadow then I will remain as close to Him as possible. I do that through His Word and prayer. Then the Word reveals to me who God is. When I began to see the God of the Bible I began to understand I have nothing to fear. The Hebrew name for God that is translated “Most High” is from the Hebrew name El Elyon referring to the truth that God owns everything. Then the title “Almighty” in verse 1 is the Hebrew name “El Shaddai” referring to God’s all powerful, all mighty nature. Verse 2 continues, I will say of the LORD….” The name “LORD” is the Hebrew name “Jehovah” referring to God’s promising making and promising keeping nature. In Verse 2 He is called “God” translated from the Hebrew name “Elohim,” which means God is Creator. So in the first 2 verses the writer mentions 4 different names for God. Why? Because when I am in the shadow of the God who owns everything, who is all powerful, who keeps His promises, and He alone is the Creator of all things, what do I have to fear? BIG God, little problems.

2. DRINK MIX PACKETS: Did we mention it's hot out here? Water bottles are guzzled, so drink mix packets are gold! Gatorade, lemonade, iced tea, crystal light are all great options.
3. MICROWAVEABLE: Anything easy to microwave is quite popular and helpful with the limited resources here -- Easy Mac, LOTS OF POPCORN, cup o'noodles, Chef Boyardee, oatmeal. Snacks that come in their own bowl are FAVORABLE as dining wear can be hard to acquire.
4. NON-PERISHABLE: Tuna (can or packets), fruit cups, peanut butter/Nutella, soups, etc.
5. CHOCOLATE is great but it's still too warm right now and they will melt in the package. Please send LOTS during the winter months, so we can stock up for next summer!

We also need travel sized toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, body wash, wet wipes, etc.) but we prefer that you send them in separate boxes as they can spill and nobody likes shampoo flavored cookies!

Please send all care packages to the following address:

USO Bagram
Pat Tillman Memorial Center
APO, AE 09354
Thank you!
